
In May 2026 we brought GOFINDME live, with 27 listed tools across 8 categories, and the editorial team had already made one decision that shaped everything else: no tool would be listed on the basis of what its vendor said about it.
That sounds obvious until you look at how most AI software directories actually work. The standard model is a submission form, a few checkboxes, and a publication queue. The vendor writes the description, chooses the category, and selects the features it wants to display. The directory publishes. Speed is the product. The implicit promise to the reader is breadth, not accuracy, and the incentive to verify anything is low because verification costs time and submission fees cover the bills.
GOFINDME's editorial criteria work differently. Every claim a vendor makes about a product goes through editorial review before it reaches the directory, and the piece of that review that generates the most friction is field verification. A vendor might describe its deployment as "EU-hosted" and mean that EU hosting is available as an option, or that data transits through EU infrastructure at some point, or that the product genuinely runs on EU-based servers with no transfer to US parent infrastructure. These are three different things with three different implications for an operator buying the tool under GDPR, and without field verification, a directory listing cannot tell them apart.
The EU software alternatives to US tools market is precisely where this matters most. Buyers shopping specifically for European alternatives are often doing so because they have a compliance requirement, a board mandate, or a DPA conversation they need to be able to answer. A listing that echoes the vendor's own framing gives those buyers nothing they could not find by reading the vendor's website.
Take a compute infrastructure tool for instance. The nature of what the tool is and what it does, means that we will check where its servers sit, who owns the legal entity, and whether the data processing agreement names an EU-based controller or a US parent. Cognigy, which raised a $100M Series C with DTCP in 2022 and positions itself explicitly as a European-built customer experience platform, makes those facts straightforward to verify. The German legal entity, the EU hosting defaults, and the customer data residency commitments are documented. Plausible Analytics, self-funded and open-source, is another example where the facts on the ground match the vendor claims: the company is Estonian-registered, EU-hosted, and the codebase is public. When those things are true, editorial verification confirms them quickly and the listing accurately reflects what a buyer will actually get.
The harder cases are tools where the vendor's marketing language is technically accurate but functionally misleading at the same time (a very common scenario in cross-border operations). A US-headquartered company with an Irish subsidiary and EU data centres can describe itself as EU-based and be correct in a narrow sense. But a buyer evaluating it as a genuine European alternative to a US incumbent needs to know that the legal entity structure, the cross-border data transfer mechanism, and the parent company's relationship to US jurisdiction are all part of what "EU-based" means in practice. That is the kind of reading a submission form cannot do.
Our editorial policy puts an emphasis on what most directories leave unstated: listing placement is not for sale. The reason for a company to be listed in GOFINDME and entering the streams of our intelligence infrastructure, must not be it paid us to be listed. Nor can it pay to move up the ranks within it. Many editorially independent journalism and serious reference publications operate this way as a matter of course, but among AI tool directories it is genuinely rare, because the dominant business model on the other side of that decision is sponsored placements and tiered visibility packages sold to vendors. The Prudos Founding Member programme, aims at adding a 50-company cohort at no cost in year one and transitions to a transparent fee in year two, is the commercial structure built to sustain editorial independence without making placement the main product.
Field verification takes longer, covers fewer tools, and produces a directory that will always be smaller, and higher in quality, than one that publishes everything submitted. A buyer looking for full market coverage will find directories with hundreds of listings more useful on that dimension. GOFINDME launched with 27 listings because those were the tools the editorial process had completed on. That is a real constraint.
What the curation model claims in return is that every field in every listing must reflect something the editorial team has checked rather than something the vendor chose to say. For a buyer evaluating Personio against a US-based HRIS competitor, or comparing European compute providers like OVHcloud, Scaleway, and Hetzner, the question that matters at procurement, legal review, or a board presentation is which listing they can actually rely on.
A directory with 5000 unverified entries does not answer that question; a directory with 200 verified ones does. For buyers who need to cite a source when a decision reaches procurement or a DPA discussion, a verification-first curation model that holds up under scrutiny and protects something larger than the directory itself: a higher-quality information landscape for evaluating AI.
